Lewis’s hits brought King Records to the attention of rock disc jockeys across the nation. (Author’s collection.)

The Platters, a smooth doo-wop group, started recording for Federal Records in 1954. The group cut “Only You,” written by manager Buck Ram, but the record was not released, at least not in time to suit Ram. He moved his group to Mercury in 1955, reorganized its personnel and rerecorded “Only You” with lead Tony Williams. It became the first of 14 Platters hits through early 1960.
